LENT 2009 - “Too many cooks?”

The season of Lent is a period of 40 days excluding Sundays, that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Eve.  Lent comes from the word “spring” and, like spring, Lent is a time of renewal, reflection and rebirth.

The Rector, with his passion for gourmet food, is using culinary analogues to look at the different ways in which the Good News of Jesus Christ is prepared and served by the four evangelists.  This Lent course will be an excellent introduction to biblical authority and interpretation for newcomers and neophytes but also a means of renewal for the established and the experienced.

The Wednesday sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Friday ones at 2:00 p.m.  Both in the library.  Bring a Bible and a good appetite (for study!).

Session I - Wednesday 4th March (repeated Friday 6th)
MARK - “Less is more”
The earliest and shortest of the Gospels, Mark’s is like a skilfully prepared “jus”.  The dramatic and formative years of the early Christian community boiled down and reduced into a rich, deep, full sixteen chapters.

Session II - Wednesday 11th March (repeated Friday 13th)
MATTHEW - “retro” chef

Matthew saw his job to call the Christian movement to taste and savour its Jewish history and heritage and to see the Hebrew scriptures whetting their appetite for Jesus of Nazareth.

Session III - Wednesday 18th March (repeated Friday 20th)
LUKE - “Try this, you’ll like it”

Some food is strange and unfamiliar and we are reluctant to eat it unless encouraged by a knowledgeable and trusted guide.  Luke wrote his gospel to persuade the Gentiles that Christianity was not a dangerous and subversive religion.

Session IV - Wednesday 25th March (repeated Friday 27th)
JOHN - “Garnish is important”

The first chapter of John’s Gospel is like a carefully chosen and elegantly arranged garnish on a well-cooked entree.  It prepares our taste-buds to anticipate the flavours in the dish.
