The Reverend Janice Mount Lowell

Above: Bishop Michael Ingham and Reverend Janice Mount Lowell.

Originally born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, I have spent most of my adult life in the United States.  My son and parents live in Florida, and the rest of my family remains in the Niagara area.

I have bachelors degrees in French, Psychology and Nursing, and practiced as a Registered Nurse for 27 years.  Most of my nursing roles have been in staff development, continuing education and administration, with the last ten years working in hospice and palliative care.  During that time, I also earned a Masters in Public Health, with a focus on Community and Family Health Education.

I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1978 and have been very active in many ministries throughout the years.  I have discerned a call to the priesthood since 1985, but in God’s infinite wisdom and time, the opportunity did not arise until 2005.  I sold my home in Florida, quit my job, and moved to Vancouver to attend the Vancouver School of Theology.  I graduated in 2008 with a Masters of Divinity.  The Dioceses of New Westminster has been very gracious in inviting me to continue my journey with them, and now a long time dream of ordained ministry has been realized.

My son, Matthew, 28, is Communications and Marketing Officer for the USF Research Foundation, at the University of South Florida, in Tampa.  The most difficult part of moving to British Columbia was leaving my son, parents and pets, but we talk weekly and maintain a close connection.

My time at VST was amazing as I stretched, grew, and was constantly being transformed in the Spirit.  My faith deepened, and my joy broadened.   I spent the summer of 2007 in Belize City as an Anglican Intern, serving at an urban parish and being the hospital chaplain.  I did my Field Placement at St. John the Evangelist, North Vancouver for three years, and my life was enriched by being part of that community.

I have been the Curate at St. Andrew’s, Langley since mid-August, and I have been blessed by living out my passion for ordained ministry.  My focus there is primarily Seniors’ Ministry, and I have embraced the role of Missionary to the Elders in the Langley community.  My passion for ministry is to create sacred space where people can encounter the living God and be transformed.    I so look forward to spending the next year and a half among you, growing in our faith and love of God, and having fun as a community committed to God and one another.
