Lenten Study Course:

Read MARK and learn

….and inwardly digest!  This year we are making Mark’s Gospel the focus of our Lenten study.  It is the very earliest version of the Good News that has come down to us, and forms the basis of both Matthew and Luke.  Studying these ancient words and the beliefs of the people for whom they were written greatly enhances our appreciation of the story of our salvation.  We hear a section of Mark’s wonderfully succinct, yet amazingly vivid Gospel on almost every Sunday during 2012.  This course will make our engagement with these scriptures more meaningful and relevant.

Session I – “Naked or over-dressed?” - Wednesday 29th February at 7:30 p.m., and repeated on Friday 2nd March at 2:00 p.m.

  • Mark’s identity, location, sources and purpose

Session II – “Can you keep a secret?” – Wednesday 7th March at 7:30 p.m., and repeated on Friday 9th March at 2:00 p.m.

  • Why is Mark’s gospel filled with commandments to keep silent about Jesus’ identity?

Session III – “Great and Terrible things” – Wednesday 14th March at 7:30 p.m. and repeated on Friday 16th March at 2:00 p.m.

  • The Jewish beliefs and ideas implicit in Mark’s Gospel

Session IV – “Passion” - Wednesday 21st March at 7:30 p.m. and repeated on Friday 23rd March at 2:00 p.m.

  • How does Mark approach the story of Christ’s suffering and death

Session V – “I believe – help thou my unbelief” - Wednesday 28th March at 7:30 p.m. and repeated on Friday 30th March at 2:00 p.m.

  • What relevance does such an ancient document have for the belief of men and women of today?
